Reading a METAR for a Simulator Weather Briefing
A beginner-friendly guide to wind, visibility, cloud, and altimeter data.
PILOT RESOURCE / GUIDE
What is a METAR?
A METAR is an aviation weather observation for an airport. Reading one can help you anticipate runway selection, visibility, cloud conditions, and potential alternate-airport needs in your simulator.
Example
METAR CYYZ 121800Z 26012KT 10SM FEW035 BKN070 12/06 A2992
This illustrative report can be read as:
- CYYZ: Reporting airport.
- 121800Z: Observation on the 12th day at 18:00 UTC.
- 26012KT: Wind from 260 degrees at 12 knots.
- 10SM: Visibility of 10 statute miles.
- FEW035: Few clouds with a reported base around 3,500 feet above ground level.
- BKN070: Broken cloud layer with a base around 7,000 feet above ground level.
- 12/06: Temperature 12°C, dew point 6°C.
- A2992: Altimeter setting 29.92 inches of mercury.
Actual METARs may include more groups for gusts, weather phenomena, runway visual range, remarks, or other conditions.
Use it before departure and arrival
- Check the departure and destination weather.
- Consider wind direction and runway availability.
- Review visibility and cloud conditions for the type of simulator flight you plan.
- Check for weather that could make a diversion reasonable.
- Refresh the observation near arrival because conditions can change.
Weather information provided through Delta Virtual is for simulation only, not real-world flight planning.
