Understanding UTC Times on Delta Virtual Events

Avoid missing an event by recognizing UTC, EST, and EDT correctly.

PILOT RESOURCE / GUIDE

Why Delta Virtual uses UTC

UTC (Coordinated Universal Time) is a shared reference for aviation, simulators, and worldwide events. It is often called Zulu time. Using UTC avoids confusion when participants live in different time zones.

UTC and Eastern Time

For pilots in Toronto and most of Ontario:

  • During Eastern Standard Time (EST), local time is UTC minus 5 hours.
  • During Eastern Daylight Time (EDT), local time is UTC minus 4 hours.

For example, a flight advertised for 00:00 UTC Saturday begins at 7:00 PM Friday EST or 8:00 PM Friday EDT. Notice that the calendar date changes.

Avoid the common mistakes

  • Don't treat EST and EDT as interchangeable year-round.
  • Don't assume an event closing date uses your local midnight.
  • Read the full timestamp, not only the hour.
  • Check whether an event actually says UTC, Z, local time, or a named time zone.
  • When a competition closes at 00:00 UTC on the first of a month, the North American local date may still be the last day of the previous month.

Quick planning method

  1. Copy the published UTC date and time.
  2. Convert it using your time zone on that specific date, including daylight saving.
  3. Put both UTC and local times on your calendar.
  4. Leave a buffer if flight completion, rather than takeoff, is required before a deadline.

Policy note: Special operations may use their own published event time windows (SOP v4.0, section 8.3).
